Queensland Conservatorium Concerti Orchestra
Associate Artist: Peter Luff (conductor)
Repertoire performed:
John Carmichael Phoenix Concerto for flute and orchestra
Notes: Each year the Queensland Conservatorium holds a competition for students to audition for a soloist position with a Conservatorium orchestra. I was fortunate enough to win a position for 2013. I chose Australian John Carmichael's Phoenix Concerto for Flute and Orchestra. I first found this gem when searching for recordings of Sir James Galway on YouTube. The concerto is only 17 minutes in duration with two movements. The first slower, and the second dazzling and technical. It features a stunning cadenza for the soloist and harp. Peter Luff conducted the Conservatorium Concerti Orchestra and my dear friend, Iona Allan, was concertmaster. I distinctly remember feeling goosebumps as the orchestra first played the opening. The strings pulled and pushed the notes over a thick texture which lay motionless underneath. Playing the first trill was enchanting. I enjoyed the challenge of creating a full, rich sound that projected across the orchestra.

Notes: In 2012, I had the pleasure of playing principal flute in the Second Queensland Youth Orchestra (also known as QYO2 for short), conducted by Sergei Korschmin. I had been in the position of second flute the year before. Early in 2012, I was asked to perform Mozart's Flute Concerto in G with the orchestra in the Old Museum Building (Brisbane). This was a very exciting time - my first concerto performance! My teacher, Gerhard Mallon, assisted my preparation greatly and the performance will always remain a fond memory. QYO2 toured to the Sunshine Coast later that year, where I had another opportunity to perform the first movement at the Kawana Water Community Centre.
