Researcher

Simone is a PhD researcher at the University of Melbourne, Faculty of Fine Arts and Music. Her PhD is in Music Performance which consists of a written thesis and recorded performance portfolio.

Based in the field of Music Psychology, Simone's thesis specifically examines non-verbal communication of musicians. She is interested in understanding the types of body movements, gestures, and postures that musicians make in performance, how musicians perceive their own movements, and the ways in which audiences understand non-verbal communication of performers. To analyse non-verbal communication, Simone applies Laban Movement Analysis to video recordings of musicians to describe, notate, and analyse their actions. Simone completed her Certification in Laban Movement Analysis from the Laban/Bartenieff Institute of Movement Studies (NYC) in May 2019. This study was funded by the Australian Government Endeavour Postgraduate Scholarship.

Simone's performance portfolio will comprise of video recordings of contemporary solo flute repertoire which features composer-instructed body movements (for example, gestures, actions, and stage directions).

Simone wishes to acknowledge the generous PhD funding provided by the Fellowships Fund Incorporated (
http://www.fellowshipsfund.com.au/) and the Graduate Women Victoria (http://gradwomenvic.org.au/).
